Footwear Design Graduate of De Montfort University
Hello, My name is Yinglin Xu. I am from Guangzhou, China. I am a creative and enthusiastic designer, specializing in accessories design, especially footwear design, and also proficient in the production of handmade leather goods (bags).
I came to De Montfort university in Leicester to study footwear design after completing a leather design course in college. Most of my creations were as inspired by daily life and nature. I believe that being observation and constant thinking is one of the most important things about being a designer. I am the runner-up in Footwear and Accessory Design Award of Fashanne Awards 2022 and was shortlisted for Student Footwear Designer of the Year Drapers Footwear Awards 2022.
INSPIRATION
My final major project was mainly inspired by the elements of ancient boats.
Sailing has had a profound impact on human history, with people traveling across the seas to develop new continents. Ancient ship making is a combination of practicality and art. This project is mainly inspired by the structure of ancient ships to design shoes, using wood joinery to reduce the use of glue. I want to design a collection of sustainable luxury women's shoes with sailing theme. I would use the elements such as the structure, decoration and carvings of ancient ships.

Bend bamboos, hand stitches, wood joinery
In this project I used some sustainable materials like bamboo. I bent the bamboo into shape, then passed through the wooden structure and fixed it. I used wood joinery designs to reduce glue usage. Especially in my second design I combined the wood joinery with a modular design that can replace the heel. For the insole I used vegetable tan leather, hand stitched the leather and wooden soles together. I also done different hand stitches and netting in the upper, want to have the best detail on the finished product.
