About Me
HI I'M VERONICA, A FASHION GRADUATE FROM NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
Veronica was initially inspired by Tish Murtha's photographic essay "YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT" a series exploring the hardships of youth unemployment in Newcastle during the Thatcher years - a time that deprived them of a productive and meaningful future.
Through creating prints that are inspired by the wear and tear of denim fabrics, I hope to encourage consumers to better take care of the garments they own. Whilst fast fashion remains ever-popular, I think it's important to slow down and understand the importance of individuality and character.
INSPIRATION
THE INITIAL IDEA BEGAN FROM AN OUTLOOK OF HOPELESSNESS
The impact caused by austerity during the 1980s was beginning to reappear. In the same way that fashion cycles come and go, it was almost as if history was beginning to repeat itself. Fast fashion was encouraging the desire for outsourcing whilst locally made products were becoming harder to find. Through my project, I focused on highlighting the characteristics of worn fabrics and exaggerated my silhouettes to mimic the "hand me down" culture of clothing during the 80s.
Through exploring the different designs and finishes that can be achieved when a fabric is worn, it encourages the viewer to slow down and consider all of the intricate details that can be found within garments. All fabrics carry their own story. I hope to encourage individuals to take better care of their garments and demonstrate that wear and tear can create an individual character, something that should be treasured.
