About Me

Hi, I'm Tabassum and I specialise in print design.

I am a print designer who loves to draw and be creative. I love experimenting with lots of different types of prints, but my favourite kinds are florals and prints of an abstract nature.

I like to take inspiration from my everyday life. As a Muslim woman, growing up I was quite limited in my choices of fashion and clothing as I was trying, and still am, to understand what modesty means to me. When particular types of silhouettes were not an option for me, I soon found I was being drawn to printed garments (mainly lots of ditsy florals), and this then became something I became inspired by as a print designer. Through my research and experiences I have designed collections with varying levels of modest looks to create something that everyone can identify with.

INSPIRATION

I am inspired by anything I can draw: on paper, using a pen, pencil or paintbrush.

I take inspiration from a range of different sources: my Final Collection, Intertwining Cultures, is inspired by Islamic architecture, in particular the interiors and exteriors of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Presidential Palace found in Dubai. The buildings and interiors are so intricate and pristine, and I wanted to interpret them in a different way. To do this I used abstract drawing methods and collaging which resulted in prints that were still intricate, but that now had an abstract nature to them.

I continued to use similar methods in my next two collections: Rose and Lily and Upcycled Paisley. I used different drawing techniques and different types of media to create floral and paisley prints in my own detailed, yet abstract designer handwriting, using traditional textiles designers (William Morris) and traditional print motifs (the Paisley) as my main source of inspiration.

DETAIL

As a print designer, my collection details mainly lie in my prints.

I like to focus on my prints first - this is how I like to become inspired and get stuck into a project. I like to do lots of research drawings, experiment with colour, scale and layout, then I print it onto fabric to be able to see the print, the colours and scale in person. This allows me to further develop my print designs. The garment details and development come next, and the physical print sample allows me to understand how the print moves and changes with the fabric as gathers, pleats or ruffles may be placed.

"I determined to do no less than to transform the world with beauty." - William Morris
