Our Bodies Bathed in Light
Using fabric, I contour the body to translate it into sculptural garments. Playing with the theme of deconstructing modesty and uneasy reveals of skin I build upon the female form using fabrics which are strongly associated with predetermined gender assumptions. Through unconventional fabric manipulations I question the perception of the censored women. My work heavily examines sensuality in reflection of the female form in hopes to subvert and therefore undermine outdated institutional standards of the body.
INSPIRATION
She displays indifference to censure and is at one with herself. The garments are organic with a considered sexuality of soft allure with a distorted depiction of grace. This collection looks to the state of undress and the unrest of an interrupted intimacy.
Having read The Yellow Wallpaper written in 1895 by Charlotte Perkins Gillman I look to respect the disreputable, her words inspire the feeling and visuals of my collection. The image displayed here is Migration West and was taken by Michael Seif for Island Journal in 2013.
DETAIL
The unnerving blend of scandalous reveals and swallowing fabric drapes will distort the body looking to emphasise the form. Lingerie and streamlined swimwear pieces are reminiscent in my designs framing the body and being worn over wrapped fabrics to constrict.
