Sam is a Photographer, Art Director and Film-maker, who cares about fashion trend shifts and the diverse narratives that can be drawn from the final composition. His art direction perspective comes from a place that aims to refine and re-establish his imagery, as if placing a glass sheet over his work as the final touch.
Sam's wide interest in themes allows his passion for research to come to the forefront, by creating different worlds within his work through a great understanding of moving and still image by technical skill. Sam's recent work, a campaign balancing the on going movement of luxury wear and athleisure trends, strongly focusing on space and narrative. Where as, for his final project he directed a short film for Shelter, which has given him an invaluable variety of experience behind the camera ready to put his creative stamp on the world.
INSPIRATION
Sam has always been inspired by the aesthetics of interior design and the visual harmony in the space that ensures the elements are evenly distributed. As one of Sam's last projects, a campaign for Saint Laurent SS22 is a study into the brand, finding key research about the brand and what elements could be created to make Saint Laurent more effective and appealing to its consumer.
This work merges luxury wear in tennis and boxing locations to create a campaign inspired by past Saint Laurent collaborations that were poorly promoted. Sam also reveals how the current state of fashion, and particularly luxury fashion has been impacted since covid, and how far locations have become so important for the consumer to escape reality and invite the unseen. He was interested in the contrast of space within these images that fueled the modern day societal connotations.
DETAIL
This short film aims to exploit arguably the biggest issue worldwide, the housing crisis. I feel the creative industry as a whole has major potential to raise awareness and help benefit those who are struggling, and a select few are, but not enough. As a creative I felt it was my responsibility to create a short film that captures a story and educates the consumer about the severity of this crisis. For me moving image has always inspired me especially when the narrative is based on true events. My idea development processes involved extensive primary research into people with disabilities who have struggled with safe housing, fashion, styling and set design experimentation. The short film was shot on a DSLR to enhance the harsh and hazy truth, reflecting my contrast in approach to my visual language between still and moving image.
