Ruby Styles is a fashion image maker who uses analogue photography to explore themes of coming of age and an intimate look into feminine identity.
My project ‘Lost in reverie’, looks inwards at my own experiences as a young woman today, and how Covid caused me to spend a lot of time in my bedroom romanticising a life that felt very far apart from my own current life situation. I feel that for many women, a bedroom is a safe place to fantasise and daydream because they may surround themselves with personal pleasures without being judged. For me some of these things include kitsch ornaments and movie posters which I incorporated into my images.
INSPIRATION
I have aimed to create images of females with an intimate glimpse into girlhood with an awkward, invasive style, evoking an emotive and relevant response from other young women viewing the images. My aesthetic is heavily influenced by film and television, with references to iconic American films like 'The virgin suicides,' 'Drop dead gorgeous,' and the recent tv show 'Euphoria,' as I aims to depict the subject's emotional condition in a cinematic manner.
I invited other females into my own bedroom where all of the photographs were shot to project my own romanticised daydreams onto them through my photography. Because only females were involved in the entire process, I believes a certain degree of trust and intimacy was developed between me and the subject that helps to make the images feel relatable to other females when viewing the images.
DETAIL
My casting methods included using social media channels and street casting to create unrivalled authenticity while depicting young women of today. I have always enjoyed collaborating with other female’s so this project allowed me to explore deeper into conceptual fashion photography, which I hope offers a stunningly honest visual story of young femininity.
