About Me

Hi, Im Ruby, a Hair & Makeup Design graduate from Solent University.

Ruby Harvey is a conceptual Art Director and Hair Stylist with a BA (Hons) in Hair & Makeup Design. With over five years of experience specialising in conceptual image curation, creative direction, and artistic hair and makeup. My work spans editorial photography, brand elevation, runway shows, and theatre productions.

I have been fascinated with the art of conceptual image construction since a young age. One of my greatest strengths as a multidisciplinary creative lies in my ability to bring together complex concepts and translate them into compelling visual narratives. I excel working fluidly within creative teams, applying my skills to all areas of the process, from research to realisation. Collaboration for me is key to bringing visions to life. During my studies, I have had the privilege of working with exceptionally talented individuals, which has been a source of immense inspiration and growth.

INSPIRATION

Beautifully Rotting - My Final Major Project

From the moment we arrive in this world, perceptions take root within us, shaping the lens through which we perceive and interact with both our physical surroundings and our inner mental landscape. Beautifully Rotting aims to express ideas about perception. The responses within the project express the profound impact idealised visual cultures, societal expectations, cultural ideologies and stereotypes have had on the way we perceive ourselves, others and the world around us.

Through a captivating blend of conceptual hair, makeup & costume design, and poignant visual story telling, Harvey uses the theme of decay, symbolised by mould that engulfs and consumes, metaphorically rotting individuals from within. Rooted in the artists own experiences, Beautifully Rotting unveils the corrosive effects of these distorted perceptions, exposing the fragility of societal constructs and the relentless pressure to conform to unrealistic standards.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

The primary response within Beautifully Rotting is a short film, directed and shot by Ruby Harvey.

The collections Generational, Faceless Beauty, and Growth combine stylized photography, conceptual hair and makeup, costume design, and thoughtful casting to explore themes such as intergenerational cultural transmissions, the objectification and loss of identity in advertising, and the impact of stereotyping and representation. These works invite the audience to critically examine their perceptions of bodies and their subconscious biases, encouraging reflection on their origins. These collections are accompanied by a short film which brings in topics surrounding social comparison theories as a commentary on how we as humans learn from one another, but what are we supposed to learn from one another when we are all comparing ourselves and others to an unattainable standard?

“The goal is not to reshape beauty standards, but to question their importance in today's society while balancing on the edge of makeup art” - Eszter Magyar
