About Me

re.esign by Reece Lomax

Reece Lomax, based in London, is a queer fashion designer and print maker. Heavily rooted in queer subculture, Reece produces fashions under brand title re.esign, offering a mix of loud, contemporary non-prints and more graphic based designs on a range of gender neutral garments, specialising in Menswear throughout his academic career.

Focusing on bring strong visual identities to abstract themes such as music, Reece offers an intersection of a range of different skills ranging from analytic research skills to a range of commercially accessible prints. We work to challenge the given norms with the industry and society as a whole, helping to amplify unrepresented communities voices, questioning the world in place around us especially in relation to gender and the queer community.

INSPIRATION

How to be a Human Being

‘How to be a Human Being’ by Glass Animals has been a huge inspiration for me throughout my time at university. It only seemed natural to me to focus in on this album for pre-collection, that was required to focusing on a group outside of societal norm.  This album is what the band described as a ‘character album’ meaning each track was written about a fiction representation of a real person. Each of these ‘Characters’ helped to inspire and create mood boards of varying aesthetic.

Throughout the album there are heavy anti-capitalism undertones and this is something I really wanted to assess via the more graphical prints produced. As designers it is important that we assess given societal norms and actually understand how they damage many people within society, and though this album, on surface level, does not have much in common with queer subculture, it is a very raw and unfiltered reflection on what it means to be individual, a key topic of queer art.

More on re.esign:

This collection is one of a handful of projects completed over my time at UCA all rotating around how queer subcultures fits into popular culture and interacts with heteronormative narratives. This is why my concepts are often formed around music, as it is a popular form of communicating narratives and the societal norms that are associated with these stories. Alongside this project, I produced a range of essays exploring gender and queer culture, which all helped to inform my projects. I have spent my time at university focusing my skillset, growing into a proficient print designer, fashion designer and skilled drawer with a great eye of visual aesthetics. I am looking forward to further expanding these skills in an industry setting, furthermore to continue growing re.esign as a creative brand.
