About Me

Hi! I am Raven, a sustainable fashion designer

As an artist with aspirations to join the professional fashion industry, i am motivated by sustainability and put it at the forefront of all my design choices. My ideas explore textiles and fabric manipulation, and i am particularly interested in finding ways to utilise waste.

My goal is to innovate within the industry, creating visually appealing and environmentally conscious designs. In my graduate collection i pushed boundarys and committed to the ideas of circularity, by creating a collection of garments fashioned with primarily deadstock and scrap materials. Growing up, i have been surrounded by hand-me-downs and secondhand clothing. when i was gifted a sewing machine, my passion for upcycling and reusing began. This early exposure is what drove me to explore innovative ways of transforming textiles.

INSPIRATION

Preserving Memories; A collection centred on documenting memories and stories by my grandma

This project was inspired by my grandma’s travels across Africa, something we bonded on when she would show me the scrapbooks and diary entries documenting her journey. I explored the places she visited and the stories she shared with me, creating silhouettes and a color palette influenced by the safari aesthetic and the landscapes in the photos she left behind. I also drew inspiration from how she described the emotions she felt in each of these locations.

I combined this concept with my desire to be eco-friendly and sustainable and created a collection made from completely deadstock and naturally dyed fabrics, creating as little waste as possible, while paying homage to my grandma’s passion.

DETAIL

Exploring Beauty in Repurposing

In this collection, the textiles were crafted with circularity in mind. Every material was hand chosen from scraps, donations, and deadstock, then manipulated in sustainable ways to give them new life. By utilising the waste created throughout the first stages of my project, I’ve ensured that even the smallest scraps stay in circulation, rather than being discarded. This approach demonstrates how materials often perceived as waste can be reimagined and given purpose. By doing this, while also combining text and images, I allow my garments to become holders of time and memories, helping them carry a sense of nostalgia that continues to develop and age.

"My clothes have a story. They have an identity. They carry memories. Thats why they are important to me, theyre not just things to wear." - Vivienne Westwood
