About Me

HI! I’M OONA, A FASHION ART DIRECTION GRADUATE :)

I am a multidisciplinary creative, with a focus on image making. My main discipline is Photography. I continually find inspiration through fashion, film and architecture. And I continue to be driven by the cultural and visual world around me. Well-being has been a prevalent theme within my practice in my third and final year.

Throughout my work I like to have fun, even with serious topics. Taking a more positive route can have a much bigger impact. Covid had an impact on my psyche but equally it helped me find comfort within creativity. I have never felt more alive, creatively. And it has pushed me further and shall continue to push me long after graduation. I would say that third year has been my best year yet, it enabled me to step out my comfort zone. For my Final Major Project; STAY-cation, I shot, styled and art directed 3 photoshoots that led to creating 3 separate zines.

INSPIRATION

HOLIDAYING AT HOME IN 2021

My Final Major Project (FMP), STAY-Cation depicts utilising your personal space, and local area in a time of eradicated travel. My work was informed by multiple visuals and texts. I was mainly inspired by House of Sunny’s main “Trip Island” collection (as well as the subsequent ones that have been released since) The use of the beach backdrop inspired my ‘Beach House’ photoshoot. It resonated with the core belief of my FMP, that we can holiday at home.

The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton, published in 2002, was influential. His book mentions various places and accounts of journeys taken around the world. Within the last chapter, De Botton makes reference to Xavier de Maistre’s 1790's book, A Voyage Round My Room, (which details de Maistre taking a trip and seeing the furniture situated in his own bedroom). De Botton takes inspiration and goes around his local area as if he were on holiday. Both of these texts inspired 2 of my final shoots.

DETAIL

3 PHOTOSHOOTS = 3 ZINES

My first zine Take A Voyage Round Your Zoom was shot in the confinement of my own bedroom. Utilising the aspect of Zoom and my furniture to mimic actions such as climbing at a beach. My zine titled; Beach House stemmed from the whole idea of looking at your house as a holiday. I bought many pool floats to merge with my day to day. For this shoot I wanted to capture the essence of having fun at home. I still continued with self shooting as I wanted to create a personal journey between me and the viewer. My final zine showcases a Journey Down the Mile. The Curry Mile is situated near my house in Rusholme, and it is rich with culture. I feel like this is a nice shoot to act as a finale. It shows the evolution of being confined in my bedroom, my house and then being allowed outside. I also wanted to mimic the easing of the lockdown restrictions so invited my friend Millie to join me. Inviting a friend allowed my intended personal journey to continue.

This past year has inspired me more than ever to continue to create. Creativity is a saviour and I feel so lucky to be able to practice it, especially on those days that aren’t as bright.
