Olivia Llewellyn is a BA Fashion Design graduate specialising in Menswear. Through her design work she playfully brings together themes of culture, family nostalgia and belonging to create a space where she celebrates her Scottish heritage plus her love for all things vintage and second-hand.
Throughout my study of Fashion Design I have developed my skills set and evolved my own personal design DNA. I enjoy taking inspiration from a variety of vintage sources yet creating long lasting pieces that appeal to the modern audience.
INSPIRATION
I thoroughly enjoy the research process of a project, letting myself become totally absorbed in the projects concept before beginning my design work. From vintage magazines to vintage kilo sales, the research process is something I will really dig my teeth into.
For the past year, my Mum and I have been researching our heritage using ancestry.com, in doing so we have deepened our knowledge of my ancestors who originated from the North East of Scotland and The Northern Isles. I get my love of history from my Grandfather, Malcolm, I grew up hearing stories of his childhood in Greenock. As well as taking inspiration from Lee Shulman's 'Anonymous Project', this project was largely influenced by the work of Martin Parr, in particular his book 'Think of Scotland'.
DETAIL
My final collection “Are We There Yet” is reminiscent of childhood memories of car journeys from Southampton to Scotland. Manifested from a wide body of research consisting of family photographs, vintage film slides and my own Scottish heritage that I explored using ancestry.com. This collection explores my fascination with personal history and identity, the warm senses of belonging and connection and how this impacts our relationships with clothes today. In celebration of my Scottish heritage, I use classic tartan fabrics and warm familiar colours to evoke themes of nostalgia and comfort. This collection is gratefully sponsored by Strathmore Woollen Company.
