About Me

Hi I’m Niamh, I am a fashion and fashion business student.

Since young I was drawn to fashion as a way to express myself, however, as I studied it I realised it does not always go hand in hand with my beliefs. I care deeply for the environment which has lead me to want change. In fashion, we have the opportunity to not only make changes in the industry but in every industry. Fashion is so influential!

My goal is to encourage people to feel hopeful about the future rather than frightened, by bringing in a positive message and focusing on the good. One of my objectives is to educate on waste culture and the small changes we can make to be more sustainable. Education is the only way to long-term changes in sustainability. I would love to be able to help bridge the gap between conscious consumers and unconscious consumers and perhaps we can take small steps to be better as a collective. Many people see sustainable fashion as aesthetically unappealing and expensive; it shouldn't have to be.

INSPIRATION

I keep every scrap - this leads me to experiment with patchwork and with dyeing.

I have always had a hoarding issue; I keep every scrap from every project. I always think there will somehow be a purpose for it and there is. Although there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of waste, as a whole I feel as though the mend and reuse mentality has been lost. This is a lot to do with everything becoming “disposable”. DIY culture is starting to emerge again which has been a huge source of inspiration. These products have been inspired by necessity and problem-solving.

DETAIL

I deconstructed and reconstructed second hand garments to create this range.

I got in touch with a textile recycling company to understand waste culture and to collect second hand materials from them, in particular ones that they are unable to reuse. I explored a variety of ways to assemble these fabrics to create an interesting design. This range is streetwear which brings in elements from masculine and feminine design.
