About Me

Hi, I'm Niamh, a graduate from Northumbria University.

Specialising in swimwear, my attitudes towards design have a sustainability focus and I pride myself on inclusivity in my work and it is placed at the core of all my designs. I aim to bring a sense of fun to my designs through contrasting bold colours and accessories.

Having a passion for swimwear and precision on detail, I found the development stages of perfecting pattern pieces and manufacturing really enjoyable – especially when seeing the end results and all the hard work that had been put into them. I feel my designs have a unique approach, and a niche take to the market due to plus size still needing attention from brands.

INSPIRATION

Motion Kini’s

The ‘Catch my Drift’ S/S 23 Collection explores women of the 1970’s, and how they fought to push the boundaries of social norms by wearing what they wanted and protesting for change. This is communicated through cut outs, pops of colour and bold accessories. Inclusivity sets the tone throughout the designs, ensuring each women feels empowered and comfortable in their own skin.

The second collection focuses on women of sport throughout the years up to the present day and how their struggle to be recognised as sporting equals to men. The project consisted of analysing activewear over the decades and taking accounts from Paralympians about how they think sportswear could be adapted to ensure that sports is an enjoyable and comfortable sport for everyone.

DETAIL

Contrast Binding and 3D Accessories

When designing the swimwear, it was extremely important to ensure that the 3D accessories wouldn’t restrict the wearer or cause any discomfort. This required a lot of development to create the objects with enough curve to sit comfortably on the body. Incorporating the 70’s aspects to the swimwear, I added cut outs to each garment, bordered with a contrasting binding to add a pop of colour and excitement. The Abzug swimsuit has been tailored to perfectly fit a 34DD bust, with darts added to ensure comfort and enough room for the wearer. This aligns with the brand’s values of inclusivity and reinforcing that ‘Every body is a ‘kini body’.
