About Me

Hello, I am Nathania Hui, a Fashion Design from Birmingham City Univer

I am a graduate who specialises in menswear. I try to find inspiration within other arts but the most that resonate with me are significant public figures within history. Digging deep into the history and journey they have taken; I find it interesting to see the influences that these figures have had on the public with their work.

I believe that fashion has no boundaries whether if it is gender-orientated fashion to stereotypes with colourways and silhouettes Creating fusions of various fashion styles that haven’t been done much before is something that helps influence my work. Tailoring is also an aspect that I enjoy. To be able to experiment various ideas within tailoring is something that I am interested in. Designing more within menswear, I realised that I would like to explore creating unusual fusions within my designs in the future.

INSPIRATION

Yoshiki of X Japan, a “musical innovator” from Japan

The inspiration for “X: The Collection” is musician Yoshiki from the band X Japan. An individual who has inspired many others from his country, Japan, to across the seas to the US. Ranging from classical to rock, there are no limits to where his musicality and talent is used, and I drew inspiration from that to having not limiting to what designs menswear must be while adding my own touch and interests.

Being in rock music at his peak, Yoshiki and his band always experimented with clothing and hairstyles while ignoring the negative stereotypes that Japan had as a conserved country. This inspired me to create a collection that the consumer can style to their own aesthetic while combining elements that wouldn’t usually go together. Bringing in elements that isn’t usually seen with tailoring was a major design point, so I researched into upcycling and deconstruction which then lead to my choice of fabrics.

DETAIL

The main fabrics in my collection were sourced from already existing garments

Designing from garments that I already had, it led my collection with the navy, brown and black colourway. Trying to keep waste at a low and to utilise most of the fabric, I went forward with a patchwork design. As tailoring was an aspect that I would like to bring forward as a designer in the future, I picked out garments with fabrics that are not usually seen within tailoring. The main fabric that stood out to me was leather which led to suede and denim. These are also fabrics that were seen within punk and rock fashion which was influenced by my concept. To help with the styling and detail, I investigated buckle fastenings which became a major design point. Having leather, denim, suede fabric, metal fastenings and patchworking, these were elements that I combined with tailoring which then made me create the X Collection.

Create what you want. Wear what you want. Do what you want. Only your thoughts and doubts stop you, not anything else.
