About Me

Naima Touray - Menswear / Womenswear Fashion Design Graduate.

Hi I’m Naima, a 23-year-old graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University in BA Hons Fashion Design and Technology in Menswear and Womenswear. My heritage plays a huge part in my design and style, having grown up in the diverse, multicultural yet run-down area of Toxteth, Liverpool.

My work mirrors my interests, personal experiences and background. The design aesthetic evokes raw effortlessness, distinctive and fresh with a bold statement. I aim to create confident timeless pieces, that spark a conversation. My mixed background is showcased throughout my work. I produce new youthful silhouettes inspired by many different research images and concepts. I pride myself in producing self-made abstract prints, innovative shapes, utilising bold colours and other techniques such as embroidery, laser cutting and pleating, utilizing cutting edge technologies and diverse fabrics.

INSPIRATION

Resort 2021 - "BEACH BOYZ" 🌴

‘Beach Boyz’ is a modern-day subculture inspired by the smiling coast of The Gambia, West Africa. This concocted subculture is formed by the merging of two polarised identities present in The Gambia today, one being the traditional Islamic culture and the other being the new generation of youths that embrace the Reggae way of life, prioritising a happy and carefree life.

The ‘Beach Boyz’ subculture believes in peace, love and prosperity. The aim of this collection is to capture the beauty of The Gambia through new modernised silhouettes depicted from traditional garments, adding a new approach to traditional clothing, whilst concurrently paying homage to heritage. The main aspects of this collection are the wet look ombre inspired by the fishermen from the beaches in Gambia, pin and fold techniques inspired by the bamboo trees seen on the beaches and islamic inspirations.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

PEARL BIKINI LINES - BAMBOO PANTS - DIP DYED FISHER NET - WET LOOK - GRADIENT EFFECT - SHIBORI

The selected fabrics for the Beach Boyz collection are inspired by the traditional Islamic and newer Rastafarian clothing worn by the versatile subcultures present in today's Gambia. Waxed cottons, leathers, fisher net, printed cottons, traditional bleached prints pay homage to the fishermen working tirelessly at the beaches. Gradient effects portraying wet clothing typically seen at the beach, loose fitting clothing, tight yet torn tank tops from foreign donation banks, pin tucks inspired by Bamboo found at Senegambia beach, pearl bikini lines inspired by Islamic traditions of modesty yet the fusion of modernisation. This collection is heavily influenced by my heritage; family and friends and lots of the primary imagery seen in my research. I wanted to capture and showcase the versatility of The Gambia, whilst adding my own twist.

'Love, peace and prosperity, God grant us the longevity".
