My graduate collection, 'love letters' explores fluidity with a romantic tone in menswear. Setting out to pay homage to my upbringing and the love story between my parents, I captured a soft nostalgia. Fabric choices were tactile and thoughtful; heavy leathers, worn-in cottons and textured wools, capturing the essence of old letters and fading photographs.
INSPIRATION
'Love letters' is a deeply personal collection, inspired by the romance between my parents Victoria and Richard. Meeting at age seventeen in a quiet seaside town, Vicky, a horse rider, and Richard, a young solider fell in love through handwritten letters and rare visits, their story unfolding with tenderness. The collection draws on this narrative of romance and memory, translated through interesting silhouettes, delicate layering and handcrafted prints.
Detailing has an equestrian nod, whilst garment structures emulate Richard's military presence, creating a fusion of the two influences. At its core, the collection is a tribute to intimacy, memory, and the kind of love that shapes a lifetime. It speaks to personal loss, but also to legacy. Stitching grief into garments that honour the past whilst looking gently towards the future.
DETAIL
The pieces within my collection explore a range of technical skill. I found print inspiration from love letters exchanged between my parents, translating this onto garments through different techniques. The prints were digitally distorted and enhanced, then hand placed with intention. I used a combination of heat pressing and screen printing depending on the fabric composition, using a range of shades within the print inks for depth and interest. The prints in combination with classic, high-quality craftsmanship and thoughtful proportions reflect both comfort and complexity.
