Mia McNaughton is a menswear designer from Newcastle, specialising in print design. Her work was inspired by rave culture, the freedom and expression people have in this scene. The prints explore the colour and fun found at a 90s rave.
Throughout my studies at Manchester Metropolitan University I took a huge interest into print design. For my final project I entered a competition with Kornit Digital and was announced a finalist meaning I got all my fabrics printed sustainably. This allowed me to have good quality materials with my prints on, it also meant I could incorporate as much print as I wanted into my collection.
INSPIRATION
My inspiration initially came from my trip to Berlin in January, I found it fascinating that peoples lifestyles were all about raving and staying up dancing all night long. I enjoyed watching everyone as they were carelessly dancing, knowing they weren't being filmed or judged. When I got back I instantly wanted to learn more, I watched so many documentaries about the rave scene during the 90s.
I learnt about the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 which introduced a number of changes to the law which meant it wasn't as easy to have raves anymore. People would then just have illegal raves and protest against the law. As I watched the footage from the raves I noticed how bright and colourful the clothing was and I wanted to ensure that followed through into my work. My Placement at Barbour supported my interest in outerwear design, which I always knew i wanted to be part of my FMP.
DETAIL
My Project contains prints throughout each look, which I had designed myself and produced by Kornit Digital. The prints really bring the outfits to life, but there are also other details that make the collection more exciting. On each pair of trousers there is a embroidered 'Filth' label on the waistband. I also incorporated my branding embroidery on the dungaree pocket of my first outfit and at the bottom of the cargo trousers on the 3rd outfit. The jeans shown in this image have my branding spray painted across the back, this allowed my branding to be evident across all my outfits.
