Mercedes has been inspired by daily life, the sky, her childhood, her roots, geometry, form, nature and human behaviour.
My mission is to re-think and reconsider what things can be if we change our perspective from “mine” into “ours”. I believe in collaborating with different disciplines to empower the way things are developed and to make the best use of materials to impact the least on the environment.
INSPIRATION
Geometry has been a huge interest for me, from Euclid books to the Bauhaus methodology, the use of primary colors for pedagogical reasons, and also as a practical and bold aesthetic has blown my mind. The grid has been another tool that influenced my work in many ways unconsciously.
Documenting my daily life has made me more conscious of the objects I share space with: the structures that stand the city, the architecture we habit and how it is a reflection of our reality. The art movements, culture and past influences as well as philosophy always determined my process and the path I took with materials, form and meaning: the soul and reason for my work to exist.
DETAIL
A:B::C:D was inspired by geometry which I used to develop the pattern of the clothes achieving zero-waste. This allowed me to make the pieces modular and switchable with buttons and zippers, so people would have a lot more options to wear. Most of the fabrics were deadstock and socks with factory mistakes as well as textile waste that I stitched together to make a yarn and then weave it.
