Hi, I'm Melissa-Kate, a womenswear pattern cutting specialist who experiments with digital prints and knit&crochet. I interned as a junior designer designing for PrettyLittleThing, Misguided, Boohoo, New Look, Zalando&Asos. I also designed love island winner collections and Quiz clothings best selling dress of 2019, part of Sam Faiers collection.
My love in fashion lies in the art and the avant-garde. I've spent years discovering what I view the world as artistically, my conclusion is exploring the world through the xenophobias of the modern world, especially with the quickly evolving digital era. I explore the fearsome subjects, and mix it with futuristic elements which throws my collections into a Black Mirror type world. I see my concepts as an art form in which I try to portray stories into my fashion; Expressing how I see the future. I plan to do a masters course as I want freedom to explore more collections & advance in couture.
INSPIRATION
I have suffered with migraines for as long as I can remember. When I get them my whole life stops in its tracks. Because of this I made my migraines my work. I am reclaiming all that time lost in pain, in the dark and turning it into the research and inspiration for my work. I draw similarities to TV glitching & the migraine sensations of touch, sight and confusion. I translated my signature style of using glitching and anaglyphs to inspire my Fred Perry X Melissa-Kate collection.
The story - The collection is set so you are trapped inside the TV looking out. As I experience my migraines on my living room couch, the TV shows you what I experience. Glitching to show auras. Time glitch to show confusion. Disruptions, Bright colours, heightened touch to living room textures. I merge the ideas of tv glitching, living room furniture and an Edwardian time warp to form how I view a migraine and express that to the world through fashion. Creating art through pain.
