About Me

HI, I’M MELDA, A GRADUATE FROM BUNKA FASHION COLLEGE

As a woman living in this ever-changing era, Melda, tells stories through fashion and transforms different experiences into pieces of clothing that speak to the social changes and cultures impacting our lives.

Melda has a love for intricate craftsmanship and likes to explores techniques found in different forms of art and incorporate them into her work in the form of textile manipulation and pattern making.Melda’s graduate collection “Bloom” was influenced by her experience growing up in a society where she felt it was customary to suppress people’s feminine sides. So, this collection invites you to find that feminine side inside you, embrace it and let it bloom.

INSPIRATION

GROWING UP I FELT LIKE WE’RE PUT IN THESE GENDER BOXES THAT TELL US HOW TO BEHAVE AS A WOMEN OR MEN

Since we were little, I feel as if we have grown accustomed to suppressing our feminine sides. There are common sayings like, “stop crying like a little girl”, which are used in situations where women show the slightest amount of emotion, or when men express themselves outside this box of gender norms and roles we are all put in. But we often forget that regardless of our gender, we all have a feminine side inside us.

Using flowers as a symbol for femininity, this collection encapsulates the natural form of flowers. This is done by forming beautiful drapes of fabric that create 3D petals, along with structures of larger-than-life silhouettes. I want this collection to be a reminder for all of us that no matter what gender we identify with, or how we look, there is that feminine side that lies within ourselves and there is no right or wrong way to express it.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

WITNESS A SERIES OF FLOWERS BLOOMING– their unique motion brought to life with a customized robot

In order to recreate the textures of flowers for this collection, I experimented with a mix of different materials, ranging from sturdy High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) to soft organdy along with Swarovski crystals. In the opening look, I attached these Swarovski crystals onto a customized robot and programmed it to create a spinning motion during the virtual runway. Similarly, the human-sized flower at the end of the runway was designed with room for movement to show it coming to a full bloom as the model moves the piece from within.

“I want this collection to be a reminder that regardless of our gender or how we look, there is that feminine side within us and there is no right or wrong way to express it.”
