About Me

Meet Megan, Make-up & hair design graduate from Solent University.

Megan is an emerging artist with creative and innovative vision driven by 'backstage beauty', high end fashion and runway artistry. She has a strong background in Art and Design and a natural passion and ability to enhance, manipulate, or beautify. Megan is often praised on her technique to radiate the skin creating a healthy flawless base.

My journey began with my passion for fine art and illustration. Growing up I would paint portraits using oil paints, oil paints are very blend-able compared to acrylic paints which dry almost instantly. I found myself consistently painting female portraits with finer detail to hair and make-up, my style developed and I began applying editorial make-up to my sketches which suggested perhaps I could specialise in make-up design. My previous artist knowledge from learning about the colour theory, blending and shading within oil paintings lead to transferring this skill set into the make-up field.

INSPIRATION

My project idea developed from the increase in social media consumption and digital reliance.

'Dystopian Futures: Life Through A Screen' is an editorial movement I produced for my FMP based around the global increase in digital domination. Keeping it creative I broke down my shoots into 6 main effects that technology and social media have on society, for example social media addiction, visual identity distortion, identity theft, unrealistic beauty standards and so on, each look was designed and influenced by existing social media logos, colours and shapes to enhance the digital aesthetic.

Each series consists of a mix between video and editorial photography. My idea arose when I received the data from a survey I created revealing how many people confidently said they were addicted to their phone, has it become an extension of the human body? Combining something aesthetically pleasing such as make-up, styling and photography with an idea of dystopian reality is something I aimed to achieve with this project, making the viewer question their digital consumption. More social, Less media.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Megan's make-up and hair design aspirations

I have always been efficient matching my clients skin to the appropriate shade and undertone as this is so important, I would say I am confident with skin matching everybody I work with and this is something I thoroughly enjoy. Art is not what you see but what you make others see. The impact and influence of make-up, building ones confidence was initially what made me so passionate about make-up application. It is always a pleasant sense of achievement complimenting somebodies face with make-up and completing a look with a very satisfied client or model. Creating that radiant and healthy look and analysing an individual’s face shape to sculpt, define and enhance their natural features is what I aim to achieve as a make-up artist and designer. Make-up for runway and fashion shoots are my aspirations for the future, the backstage energy and buzz just before a big shoot or production is something I am extremely passionate about. I aim to build upon my experience to achieve my ultimate goal as a Fashion HMUA.

“It’s not just about the make-up applied to the face, it’s about the unique artistic design created to suit and empower every individual specifically”- Megan McPhilemy
