About Me

Hi! I'm Maisy, a Fashion Atelier graduate from UCA Rochester.

Maisy is a designer and maker specialising in menswear. She combines thoughtful design with modern functionality, to produce modest garments with purpose and practicality. Made with meticulous craftsmanship, her style fuses workwear silhouettes with sportswear detailing, to create beautiful, everyday pieces.

Motivated by the ongoing need for longevity, Maisy is inspired by functional and timeless design. Throughout her degree, she has advanced the technicality of her designs, whilst remaining true to her clean and modest aesthetic. Drawn to minimalist design, refined silhouettes and neutral colour palettes, Maisy uses hidden design details and unusual fabric combinations to achieve a contemporary and commercial outcome; utilising her atelier skills learnt on modules in Bespoke Tailoring, to manufacture garments of the highest standard.

INSPIRATION

Hazy photographs of my grandfather sailing prompted a nostalgic and familiar feel to the collection.

My graduate collection ‘Between the Sails’ was conceptually developed through research into my grandfather’s passion for sailing. Photographs and stories of his time on the water bought up a notion of nostalgia that I wanted to emulate within the garments. The soft, neutral colour palette is reminiscent of the hazy tones in the photographs, with the heavy Melton and waxed cottons suggesting a feeling of familiarity - a garment that has been ‘lived in’.

Through wider research into specialised sailing wear, I wanted to design the collection from a performance perspective. Although the collection is fashion focused, every design decision was informed by a purpose or function. The oversized silhouettes and prominent features (such as the high neck) were established through the need for comfort and protection from the elements. The materiality of the garments was decided through the need for warmth, waterproofing, and durability when out at sea.

DETAIL

Hidden details elevate the technicality of the garments, without interrupting the clean aesthetic.

Throughout my collection there is a strong focus on hidden and subtle detailing, which enabled me to showcase my atelier skills and push the technicality of the garments, without interrupting the modest and clean aesthetic. This became an instinctive link with the hidden design details also found in specialized sailing gear. For example, tuck away hoods, hidden pockets and multifunctional garments are fundamental to the practicality and performance of their design. The image to the left shows the manufacture of a multifunctional pocket. The vertical pocket opening is for easy access to warm the hands, on top of which is a separate zipped pocket to safely store smaller, important items (e.g: phone or keys). I loved exploring this idea throughout the development of my final collection and I hope to continue to pursue this style of work in any future practise.
