About Me

Hi! im MaĂŻa a final year student at Kingston University.

I am a 24-yearold graduate from Kingston University. I was born in France, but I have been living in the UK for eight years studying art and design, fine art and then fashion. Having travelled around the world I started becoming aware of my carbon footprint and decided to work sustainably by using organic fabrics, deadstock, local and recyclable products etc.

My aesthetic is inspired by versatility. My final collection development focusses on sustainable, genderless fashion, creating design that identifies a range of models, body sizes and genders. My models are my muses and create the individuality and community of the collection. The design works as pieces and a cohesive look. A range of specially curated pieces working as a collection. Stylistically queer, punky, and brave, yet balanced with tradition and a delicate, feminine edge and detail. I aim to be inclusive and champion ethnicity, size, gender and even faith when designing.

INSPIRATION

BIGOUPUNK

This collection is based on Brittany, France, where I grew up. Brittany has a historically distinct culture from the rest of France, including in its clothing traditions. My creations are a modern take on my cultural heritage, heavily influenced by a punk aesthetic. Each look is designed for and made to fit the specific body shape of the models wearing it, all of who identify as queer. In this way, the designs are inspired as much by body shape and queer identity as by punk and Breton traditions.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

A corset and some stripes.

I always wanted to make corsets but thought it would be unachievable. During lockdown I watched a video that came with a pattern and I made my first corset. Since then, corsetry has become my niche and I am able to design different styles and sizes. This corset is on my look 2, worn by my non-binary friend Will, and made for their size and proportion. I used scraps of denim and calico and bound them with cotton herringbone tape. The base layer underneath is a bamboo jersey dress that I hand-painted on the body to create textured stripes, inspired by the Breton flag.

“Être différent n'est ni une bonne ni une mauvaise chose. Cela signifie simplement que vous êtes suffisamment courageux pour être vous-même.” - Albert Camus
