About Me

I'm Luke, a footwear and accessories design student at UON.

I have always loved being out on the go exploring different places with my friends from going to new cities to walks in the countryside and finding derelict buildings and other cool things. Around the age of 17 I found my interest in footwear and started looking at trainers in a different perspective.

New York has always interested me because of how much it influences popular culture with different films, games and music all influenced by the city. NYC is also where street art, sneaker culture and hiphop started which all three have influenced my designs. I have always wanted to visit NYC and in December 2021 I got the chance to go and spent a week wondering round the streets and looking at all the sights I had seen in pictures and movies.

INSPIRATION

New York City.

The inspiration for my FMP is exploring streets and sights of New York City. Looking at iconic tourist landmarks and architecture, street culture and street art. Focusing on the Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler Building and the One World Trade Center. Street art was a big influence in my early research looking at artists like Taki 182's subway art. I took inspiration for my colour pallet straight from the landmarks. I also added a copper colour for the Statue of Liberty as she is actually made from copper.

The actual trainers take inspiration from the exterior look of the three landmarks. The trainers based off the Chrysler Building take their look from the crowns on the building using the curves and triangles. The trainers based off the Statue of Liberty take from the drapes from her clothes which I turned into a sort of wave look and also from her crown. The trainers based off the OWTC take from the angled look of the building and from the grey edges from each large triangle side.

Final Products

I made four out of the six trainers I designed. They are all made from leather to offer longevity and synthetics to give a modern trainer look. The soles have been made out of EVA foam and then three have been scanned and 3D printed in PLA plastic.

Somewhere between living and dreaming is New York City.
