I specialise in knitwear and menswear and have spent my time at UWE refining my technical knit skills.
My work is inspired by the intuitive and emotional responses of myself and people around me. Looking to culture and heritage for further inspiration. My aim is to make my garments inclusive and expressive - to feel a part of something.
INSPIRATION
A personal exploration of textural and conceptual research centred around the notion of ‘Hiraeth’ - a Welsh word loosely translating to a longing for a place, feeling or memory that we call home. Turning to escapism as a form of comfort and the role tactile elements play within this. Repetitive written responses as a form of documentation of the places of ‘Hiraeth’ of those around me. Informing every element of my knit sampling from colour, texture and yarn to form and construction.
Focusing on these documented delicate responses and extracting my intuitive response to them, combining my personal perception with that of the person who’s Hiraeth I am exploring. Each sample is named after the person who’s place of Hiraeth inspired it, and consequently each sample is used in a way that feels appropriate for this person. This transforming the project into a very personal library of documentation, responses and samples relating to those closest to me.
DETAIL
An intuitive response to Sleepsound by JamieXX. This project is about the instability and inconsistency of our perception. How personal experience, memories and intuition alter how we as individuals perceive situations. An intuitive response is a combination of experience, associations, feelings and creative imagination, this helping us articulate experiences often hard to describe. I wanted this project to be an exploration of haptic relationships - how a feeling or experience can be translated into something textural. An expressive and a very natural feeling project; experimenting with techniques and approaches to create a delicate yet articulate body of work. This sample is a fine gauge inlay sample - focusing on delicate ribs holding the floats of yarn.
