About Me

Hello, my name is Lottie, a student at the University of Derby.

Growing up on the Welsh-English boarder in rural Shropshire, I have always been inspired by our connection to nature. This fascination is what drove me to learn more about slow and conscious fashion practices using traditional artisan techniques to create meaningful designs with a story behind them.

My Vision: Inspired by the delicate flower-like intricacies of family heirlooms and keepsakes, and the durability of everyday wear and tear in our natural surroundings, my aim is to create unique, high quality goods which stand the test of time and remind us to cherish our environment. I hope to respect our connection to nature by celebrating the natural beauty of raw fabrics, embracing the character of natural imperfections, texture and slub. Allowing us to carry a piece of nature wherever life may take us...

INSPIRATION

The initial inspiration for my concept came from my time at home in the garden during lockdown.

After returning home unexpectedly from my placement in London, I felt displaced by the slower pace of life back home on my family's farm in rural Shropshire. Like many at this time, it was a chance to reflect on life, and for me this personally meant coming to terms with my own emotions and things in my personal life that I had not dealt with up until this point. I started to observe my way of life back home, the much simpler lifestyle and increased need for self sufficiency at an uncertain time.

Being "In the Garden amongst the Flowers" for the majority of my time, I found myself transformed by a sense of serenity and clarity, which allowed me to heal and grow. This discovery planted a seed in my head, I wanted to celebrate growth and healing and exploring the area I grew up in, creating a collection inspired through being surrounded by nature and the memories of living in a rural agricultural area, whilst reflecting on the positives to come out of such an extraordinary time.

DETAIL

Inspired by Land Girl uniforms I wanted to create garments which stand the test of time

Inspired by the land girl movement of the 1940’s, make-do and mend and natural botanical forms, I focused on creating details with longevity in mind. Incorporating recycled and second-hand materials and trimmings, such as including using my great grandmother’s collection of mother of pearl buttons. I wanted to explore my concept in a way which I could also explore different channels of incorporating sustainability into my design practices, such as combining the utilitarian qualities of the Land girl uniform with my delicate leaf broderie anglaise design on 100% GOT Certified Linen using natural dyes.

At Home The heart of home is where they flee, Amongst their thoughts to unwind and see. At one with self, content to be, In space to find and wander free. - Our Isles by Angus D. Birditt
