With a background in fashion and textiles, alongside an interest in psychology and mental health this collection captures those ideas to create a meaningful and thoughtful collection. While exploring the emotions we gain from the environment and how the beauty of nature can benefit our wellbeing.
The collection includes ideas of freedom, tranquillity and calmness; trying to capture the idea of looking after our mental health, but also respecting the environment. Echoing this idea of tranquillity I found inspiration while thinking where I feel most calm, the ocean.
INSPIRATION
Researching into the idea of the work by American Psychologist, Renee Lertzman who talks about 'climate depression' and 'ecological grief'. This is the psychological response to climate change and loss of the environment. It allows us to explore the emotions with regard to climate change and the affects such as: despair, shame, guilt, conflict etc. Therefore my collection is thinking about how we can turn these emotions around, and create a sense of calmness and equanimity.
The idea of ataraxia is reflected throughout the collection, this is the state of freedom from emotional disturbance and anxiety. In a fast paced world, sometimes we need to slow down. Slow down for our wellbeing but also for the wellbeing of the environment. Looking at the movement within the ocean, with the meandering lines which mimic the ups and downs we feel in life while also looking at the icy structures within the ocean and allowing my collection to explore these structures, shapes and patterns.
DETAIL
The collection Climate Melancholia aims to create calmness, and equanimity, whether this makes you feel at peace while wearing the final outfits, or just thinking and increasing your knowledge about your own mental wellbeing and the environment. It will hopefully allow you to step back and give you the chance to understand where you feel calm, whether this be the ocean aswell and how you can allow this calmness to look after yourself but also the environment. The ocean is an incredible part of nature, but due to environment issues such as overproduction, mass waste, it is quickly being destroyed. With this in mind, I am aiming to create as least waste as possible, and some of the outfits will be put together using a zero waste construction. This allows me to gain inspiration from the ocean and the environment, but also fully respect it, and try limit my damage while producing fashion. The collection will be aimed around Spring Summer and the target market is a sophisticated women.
