Kirsty Brawley is a Scottish design student from Glasgow, who studied in the Scottish Borders.
Throughout my degree, I have experimented with and researched different design styles and a variety of consumer markets, and with this, I have discovered my passion for womenswear, in particular, occasion and bridal wear. I have always incorporated a unique and personal element into my work, through themes or styles inspirations.
INSPIRATION
From a young age, I was always playing dress up in my mum's clothes and makeup, and last summer I came across a photo from my childhood of me wearing her wedding dress. The gown was so long I couldn't even walk in it without tripping over and the huge puff sleeves barely held up on my shoulders.
It was a funny sight seeing such a small girl in an oversized dress but it brought back such fond nostalgic memories and after finding more photos of late family members on their wedding days, it had an impact on me. This led me to start researching my family's past and other martial traditions from across the world. Having done such a wide scope of research, I then narrowed in on Western bridal styles and the impact of media on occasion wear, in particular, the golden age of Hollywood.
DETAIL
After designing my embroidery pattern, it took 4 full days to machine embroider all the panels for the trousers and the dress. The dress alone consists of at least 532,640 embroidered stitches, it's perhaps my favourite part of the whole collection.
