About Me

Hi, I’m Katie, a Fashion Design graduate from Arts Uni Plymouth!

I am a Fashion Designer and Garment Maker with a highly colourful and visual aesthetic. My work with surface textile design offers a sense of freedom, playfulness and fun that is underpinned by strong technical skills.

My highly colourful and visual aesthetic offers a sense of freedom and playfulness. Colour is extremely important to me. I chose neon, fluorescent and bright colours to symbolise self-expression and exhilaration, bringing a fantasy world to reality. I aim to communicate surface textile designs through important decisions focused on colour and texture. All my work is underpinned by strong pattern cutting and industrial sewing skills as well as an informed and intelligent use of fabric. My strong visual style is backed up by research, technical packs including Illustrator and InDesign.

INSPIRATION

Planet Kataie is a combination of distinct elements that makes me, me.

My graduate collection is called “Planet Kataie” and the concept originated from Nostalgia and Escapism and has evolved into a combination of distinct elements that makes me, me. I combine an interest in rave and festival wear with a utilitarian vibe. In a hope to escape my boring hometown, through video games and digital worlds. Festivals and rave scenes are used to distract me from reality through dance and colourful outfits. My attention to detail has been influenced by my parents, both are mechanics.

I aim to communicate surface textile designs through important decisions focused on colour and texture. My work originated from research-based experimentation combining elastic, mesh and ripstop fabrics. I worked with traditional pattern cutting skills and worked on the stand to construct my garments. Choosing experimental shapes with the aim to communicate surface textile designs focused on colour and texture. Using inspiring silhouettes using tucks in my sleeves to emphasise the slash fabric.

DETAIL

The fluorescent colours combined with experimental fabrics brings a fantasy world to reality.

Colour is extremely important to me and plays a vast feature within my illustrations and designs. My illustrative style is communicated through fun and youthful garments. The layering of different pencils, pens and colours represents the slash fabric manipulation.
