About Me

Hi, I'm Katie! A Fashion Design graduate from Nottingham Trent.

Katie Bearcroft is an innovative designer who loves to discover new ways to produce her work. Enjoying pattern cutting, she often explores less traditional methods such as zero waste and subtraction pattern cutting. She is passionate about sustainable and ethical design, believing in positive change for the fashion industry.

After 7 years of studying fashion and textiles, I have developed a particular interest in the sustainable aspect of fashion design. My love for nature has stemmed from a childhood spent in nature, camping, walking, and exploring the natural world. This passion for nature feeds into my work and allows me to consider ethics and sustainability wherever I can. As a designer, I want to leave a positive impact and inspire others to do the same.

INSPIRATION

The fashion industry is due a revamp. Have you considered the mark you make?

Whilst spending the summer taking long walks in the Lake District, I couldn’t help but notice the clear signs that other humans had been there too, whether it was a worn down path or a name carved into a tree, there were always traces of another human-made through our interaction with nature. This caused me to think more deeply about human connectivity through pathways and mark-making. Through these mark-making journeys we see throughout nature, we connect with one another and nature.

I was also interested to see the ways in which nature responds to our mark-making, or makes marks of its own. Seeing natures response made me realise how the marks we leave behind can be damaging to the environment. This led to the creation of my project "The Mark We Make". Whilst considering how to design a collection that would not leave a negative impact, I researched and used sustainable or biodegradable fabrics, such as cork leather, Tencel, silk and deadstock fabrics.

Connecting with nature through the marks we make

Sustainability is at the heart of my project, from the pattern cutting techniques to the fibres used. Zero waste techniques and patch working allowed me to reduce waste. Each fabric was sourced locally with sustainability in mind. Where possible I used biodegradable fabrics, but if these could not be sourced I opted for dead-stock and 100% recycled fabrics.
