About Me

I am a Fashion Design Graduate from UCA

From a young age I had my mind set that I would be taking up a creative path. I was in love with staying artistic through sculpture, drawing and designing; I always found it hard to understand what it is the one thing I like the most. While studying Fashion Design I finally had a chance to combine art in so many ways and express myself to the fullest.

During my time at the University for the Creative Arts, I got to see Fashion Design from a whole new perspective. I got to transform concepts and the messages they carry into a 3-dimensional form that is not only practical but meaningful. I was given a chance to change clothing into more than what you usually see them as. My graduate collection is a chance for me to tell my story, my family's story to the world. Here I bring what matters to me as I take fashion as another medium of art.

INSPIRATION

While exploring the things I like I was reminded of my grandma's story.

My childhood is filled with memories of the time spent at my grandma’s place in a secluded town in Lithuania. Not only it is the memories of me playing in the garden, but stories of my grandma’s life, the struggles she experienced after she had fled from her home as the USSR was occupying her homeland. Because my family was seen as the enemies of the regime they were listed to be exiled to Siberia; they had no choice but to flee from home to survive.

When thinking about the struggles my late grandmother had to go through, I try to imagine the things that my grandma might have seen at the time, like the military, other people found in similar circumstances. I analyse their clothing examples from around the time. For a more personal approach, I looked at some of my remaining family photos, referenced my grandma’s garden in my prints. I used dried flowers that she cared so much about. At the same time, think about my grandma’s love for her country.

The print

The very initial idea for my prints come from the textures found in soil that I had photographed at my grandma’s countryside. To express the combinations and textures of my references I chose acrylic pouring as the main working technique. Those paintings then became the main background of all of my prints. I reedited them, worked around the most exciting parts. On top of that I placed dried flowers from my grandma’s garden, one of them being the lily she is holding as a child (as can be seen in the very first page of my portfolio).
