As a makeup designer, I believe that makeup can change lives. Makeup evokes confidence, happiness and is an artistic form of self-expression used by many. I admire the skin in its' natural glory and believe that our skin tells a story while the transformation process of applying makeup is an important method to give someone that confidence.
Colour cosmetics are a valuable way to not just decorate the face and body but also used to enhance and bring attention to how incredible natural skin is. Skin should look like skin, and I pride myself in being knowledgeable about even skin tones and colour correcting. I design for the skin, and that means communicating, understanding and responding to climate changes as well as client demands. I essentially work with the concept of smart skin in makeup, which means that I am constantly evaluating how products and application methods work together to illuminate new design approaches.
INSPIRATION
Acknowledging that some skin conditions can be severe and life-changing with little representation of how they function through touch and vision, has changed my design thinking surrounding the body, and I am constantly seeking new interpretations of what is desirable in designing for the skin.
The skin as a working organ fascinates me and I love being able to work on so many different skin types and ethnicities, learning about how each one works slightly different from the previous and experimenting with products to see which works best for what skin type.
DETAIL
For me, the skin is complicated as it is a media for information communication. When I look at skin, I see it fulfilling the dual task of it being a barrier and a medium of exchange between humans and the environment. The skin is so delicate and working with facial skin especially requires practice and knowledge. Designing for the skin is driven by unlimited possibilities in cosmetic products and application and I see it as a new challenge for contemporary make-up designers.
