About Me

I am Joe Cheng, a Kingston University Fashion BA graduate

The collection is rooted in deep deconstruction practices which started with the deconstruction of a baby carrier and its inner foam padding which resulted in a series of engineered padding in garment linings to create a soft tailored look.

A direct reflection od how I navigated the pandemic as a designer, the collection started from a nihilistic point of view questioning what fashion represents and its functional value while constantly experimenting with unconventional ways of wearing things, changing how clothing coulkd be worn by draping with a baby carrier, recreating torn garments, dissecting the outcome garments into smaller layers and layering the pieces interchangeably

INSPIRATION

Deconstructing a baby carrier intrigued my fascination for objects and its internal construction.

Reflecting on the pandemic, I started drawing similarities of the Covid incident with the Chernobyl power plant dissaster 1986, highlighting parallels in their emergency response and political inference. Inspired by the mutated bodies of that radiation disaster, I started deconstructing a baby carrier which resulted in a series of experiments using its inner foam padding.

Taking references from artists such as Lygia Clark, famous for her Obra Mole, the collection focuses on creating a soft sculptural look with printed jersey drapes layered with engineered padding in outerwear to create a tailored look.

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Printing into the jersey cowl drapes, I was able to explore the shadow and depth of the silhouette

By experimenting with printed knit jersey, I further developed the fabrication and colouration of the collection. It is an ode to the transition out of the pandemic by injecting splashes of colours into the collection.

By constantly taking apart my toiles, dissecting them, adding padding in different areas of the lining, working in asymmetry, I have found a design solution/ pathway that works best for me
