About Me

Hi, I'm Jasmine and I'm a Fashion Branding and Communications graduate

Throughout my degree, I have developed a passion for editorial styling and art direction. I have established a strong aesthetic which has enabled me to create unique and creative concepts, ideas, brand visions, and a platform to portray given beliefs. Fuelled by this, I decided to create my Independent Final Project - Liberty Editorial.

As part of my Independent Final Project, I created Liberty Editorial which is a digital fashion publication centred around mental health and the coming out of lockdown. Formatted in a website, it featured a biannual fashion editorial which was presented in the form of a lookbook. The fashion editorial visually communicated the importance of reaching out for help through our mental health journeys and subsequently, transitioning out of lockdown.

INSPIRATION

The inspiration for this project stemmed from my own post lockdown anxieties.

As we adapt to a new life beyond lockdown, young people were still left feeling anxious about the uncertainty our new normal holds. The pandemic saw a surge in mental health crisis', with NHS figures showing the number of people in contact with mental health services were at its highest since the first lockdown(1.2 million)since the beginning of 2021. (Mind, 2021)

Despite this mental health crisis, minimal support and encouragement were provided. In a time when the government should be stepping up, they did not, and instead, young people were forced to suffer in silence. Despite this, young people were still blamed for the spread of the virus. Their worries of protecting family members, fear of the virus, and the uncertainty of their future were dismissed and instead, they paid the ultimate price of their future careers and mental wellbeing.

DETAIL

For my dissertation I explored how Indian women are represented in Vogue India.

With an interest in how South-Asian women are portrayed in the media I wanted to seek the answer to if Vogue India are providing empowerment to women in India or if they are selling a dream desire of what women should look like. I conducted secondary research into how the impact of the constant portrayal of Eurocentric standards of beauty, and how that impacts Indian women. Alongside this, extensive primary research was conducted including a content analysis, a semiotic analysis and a photo elicitation which included three participants to annotate content from various issues of Vogue India and list everything they noticed about the imagery. I found the topic fascinating and plan to further my study in the future.
