About Me

Hi, I'm James and I am a Graduate from UWE Fashion Communication.

I bring an individual approach to my work which is influenced by my heritage, sportswear and costume, and my upbringing in Northern Ireland. I characterise my visual outputs through everyday observations, clever use of distinct cultural and personal references as well as an abundance of tongue-in-cheek humour.

My work is diverse across personal and commercial projects that include recently commissioned work for Lazy Oaf's AW20 collection (Body Parts). My first personal project for my final year has involved creating a zine titled 'Look Busy' - which documents and observes people, objects or things of interest that 'look busy'. Furthermore, my second personal project titled '(What's the) Craic' is a publication that aims to celebrate and spotlight Northern Ireland in a positive light whilst drawing upon its heritage, culture and people through thought-provoking imagery, graphic design and collage.

INSPIRATION

Styling and Casting.

Styling influences for this project include all things 'Irish', Leprechauns, fancy dress costume and Paul Mescal frolicking around London in GAA shorts. I made sure to cast individuals who resembled the type of mischievous characters you'd encounter on St Paddy's Day at the pub or a house party. I quite liked the idea of having the contradictory placement of these characters in urban settings - which you might never see.

This work makes up part of an ongoing project with Dean Davies, in which he sees each student as equal collaborators in the creation of Fashion image.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Art Direction - Proposed editorial for The Face magazine.

Dynamic & narrative-driven Art Direction inspired by scenarios commonly found in 5-aside Football, particularly in reference to my adolescence and experience playing 'red arse' with my mates. Hand drawn sticky notes narrate the sequence of events, giving a visual cue of what's about to happen (yes this involved a football being kicked at someone's a**e!).

My future plan definitely involves exploring the publishing landscape further - as I am really interested in working in editorial and print projects, in addition to developing my own personal work.
