About Me

Womenswear Design Graduate from Leeds Arts University

Jaden Nicholson is a Fashion Designer due to graduate from Leeds Arts University in 2022. Specialising in Womenswear, her designs focus on print and colour in order to protest social and political change. Combined with distinctive silhouettes and intriguing design, the collection brings together a feeling of rebellion with sportswear.

Her graduate collection titled “Women Should Be Safe” draws on the inability for women to be safe in various aspects of life. In order to push forward reformation, slogans such as “Women Should Be Able to Walk Home Safely” and “How I Dress Does Not Mean Yes” are repeated across garments. Large silhouettes are used to showcase the “ideal” protection needed for women to be safe in today’s climate. Designs include a female face which is printed onto a lucent satin fabric in order to prompt anger and rebellion against the current laws put in place which do not protect women enough.

INSPIRATION

The concept began after hearing the news about the disappearance of a woman named Sarah Everard.

What would it take for us to live in a country where women feel safe? Imagine a country where women can walk home from work in peace without ever having to turn around to make sure someone is not following her. Where women can have fun dancing in a club without the thought of getting spiked ever crossing her mind. It wouldn’t take much to make these changes in order for women to be safe, yet we still live in a country where women are spiked and raped daily.

Even though women’s safety has always been a concern and something of which women have had to deal with, issues were raised recently after the disappearance and death a woman. One woman named Sarah Everard, was making her way home before a police officer made a “false arrest” of her, and using his own car drove her to a rural area, where she was raped and then murdered. Unfortunately, without government interference, events where women fall victim of crimes will still occur. We need this to stop.

"The Way I Dress Does Not Mean Yes"

Ultimately, the sad fact is that the government can make changes by increasing punishment on the criminals that commit these crimes in order to stop the violence- yet the only thing that is increasing is the number of these crimes.
