About Me

Hi, I'm Izzie. A Sportswear Design Graduate from Falmouth University.

Growing up in Cornwall has given me a love for the outdoors, however there are still so many people not experiencing and exploring the great natural surroundings we have on our doorstep. This collection is about encouraging women to get outside and enjoy nature.

Studying Sportswear Design and growing up on the coast gave me an interest in how this industry is affecting everything I love. After writing my dissertation on how 'The sportswear industry is destroying its own playground', I am very aware of the effect of microplastics, and with this knowledge it helps inform my design decisions.

INSPIRATION

The aim of this capsule is to be able to encourage other people to enjoy and experience adventure.

Physical and mental health is becoming more addressed now than ever, and many experts say that just being outdoors can improve these. It can boost the immune system by increasing white blood cell count due to the body adapting to different conditions. It is also used by athletes to reduce inflammation of the muscles, as it slows down the blood flow to your limbs, which allows the muscles to recover much quicker. Saltwater also heals damaged skin due to the magnesium, calcium and potassium it holds.

Being outdoors is like having a natural high, it releases endorphins and a hormone called Cortisol from the brain to make us feel happy and excited. Cold water submersion is believed to reduce stress and depression by increasing your blood pressure and adrenaline as it kickstarts the fight or flight response in the nervous system. With COVID this year, outdoor activities have increased, and many say cold water swimming has helped them cope. This capsule kit exists to aid this.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

Using inspiration from Cornish Coastal walks, the designs were created for function and comfort.

The TED (Textiles Environment Design) 10 Sustainable strategies are now always my first thought before design. Considering function and comfort, Gwlas Ha Mor ticks those boxes. The changing robe has 2 different detachable lining's, one is lambs fleece and the other is bamboo towelling. I collaborated with textile student Gabrielle Collard who specialises in embroidery, for the welts of my changing robe and dungarees. Using the Irish embroidery machine, she created lovely lines that represent different popular Cornish walks. The bag has 2 different compartments to keep wet and dry things separate, and also has an extra cover that unfolds from a pocket on the back. The Tencel dungarees are lightweight with deep zipped pockets, with lots of movement in the legs for adventures. Where possible I have used natural fabrics, however for function this was not always achievable. When using synthetic fibres, I have ensured that the products are durable, which increases the longevity and reduces the need to consume.

Yvon Chouinard: "You have a whole life in the outdoors, you realise you have a sense of responsibility to protect these wild places.”
