About Me

My name is Hannah and I'm a proud of who I am and where I come from.

Fashion design has allowed me to express myself and communicate what matters most to me. I've always been a creative individual from a young age and have explored various art forms such as textiles, product design and performing arts, which ignited my love for fashion even more. As I knew from the age of 8, what university I wanted to attend.

I'm passionate about representing myself as black individual being of Afro-Carribean heritage as I'm from Ghana and Jamaica. Throughout my university experience, I have been evolving and learning more about myself as a designer and as a person, as I want to be a designer that represents and is proud of their culture and ethnicity. I'm a hardworking and commited person, who is always finding ways to improve myself to become the best designer I can be. My main focus in design is in print, textiles and design illustration. I enjoy technical as I like to finish everything to a high standard.

INSPIRATION

The main source of inspiration is my culture and heritage as well as British upbringing.

I'm inspired by my surroundings and upbringing in the UK and Afro-Carribean heritage. I like to create a fusion of the two cultures and how they all intertwine. Living and growing up in London, has not only inspired my aesthetic but my strong and conscientious work ethic. I design womenswear pieces but my main focus of streetwear has enabled me to create unisex pieces through outerwear.

My fondness for illustration has lead to my create street art and graffiti based pieces as I'm captivated by the use of colour and print. My inspiration from my various cultures has also influenced techniques I use, as I like to incorporate traditional African techniques which heavily influenced my final major project as I've used to traditional weaving but given it a modern day twist. I'm inspired by the culture as it's a part of me that I want to share with the world.

DETAIL

Merging tradition with streetwear

Taking inspiration from streetwear aesthetics in the form of footwear, I have used old deconstructed Nike airforces and Jordans to influence my trainer detailing and print. My final garment is fusion of traditional African weave with streetwear impact as I've finished off my weave sleeves with metal aglets that you would find on the end of your shoelaces. The detailing of the garment is a celebration of my culture and personality as well as my inspiration as my garment is formed of layers and panels inspired by the deconstruction of trainers.

As a black individual, I want to represent and be part of the journey and progression of diversity in the fashion industry. So that future generations will be proud and bold in face diversity.
