About Me

Enjoying Experimenting The Boundaries of Embroidery

Exceeding the boundaries of embroidery by manipulating what a sequin can be. Through my practice I enjoy using beading and various types of stitch to create detailed 3D embroidery that lively jumps from fabric.

I do this in different ways but one in particular that inspires me is to design my own patterns and then digitally print them onto various fabrics as a canvas. I then explore this further by developing different energetic forms from layering sequins and beads of different heights. The various levels of densities encourage me to be as experimental as possible through differing details. My work should imitate the fun and playfulness of the process.

INSPIRATION

Sea Slugs Are Unusual Creatures With Quirky Characteristics To Disguise Their Fatality

Deceiving poisons are something common amongst nature. Attractive creatures in disguise of beauty to trick life into harm. Sea slugs are an unusual example of this using their vibrant features and patterns as a way to lingerie creatures in while underneath the surface they are in fact fatal, they can and will kill. This concept drew plenty of interest into what danger looks like and what was found was fatally looks magnificent.

Their unique characteristics of tentacles, gills, teeth and many more are what inspired me to want to replicate these in an embroidery form to promote the uniqueness of the organism. Their contrasting colours clash together to form patterns which differ from each slug to the next. I hadn’t seen them before as they aren’t hugely popular within textiles which made me want to do them even more to highlight their individuality.

DETAIL

Hand Embelleshed Garment

Through experimenting different techniques of embroidery using these to translate colour, movement and pattern I reached this dress as my final outcome. My intention for this high end fashion garment is to to as vibrant and deceiving as a sea slug. I have established various beading techniques that replicate different movements inspired by the slugs themselves so the sections of beadings are all of a different level and texture. This dress in bodies the slug through showing the lively illusion they show to disguise their poisonous nature.
