Jonathan Goddard is a Fashion Design graduate from University of Northampton. He was born in Mauritius but moved to the UK at a very young age, during secondary school his passion wasn’t initially directed towards fashion but computing. It was only when his attention towards music and the influence of American rap culture grew rapidly.
I was inspired by the unfairness of capitalism in areas where corporate companies establish a new settlement in under-developed countries making it difficult for local communities to fit in. A new city always attracts wealthy shoppers creating a social gap between the working class and wealthy.
INSPIRATION
Jonathan was inspired by the endless scenarios of the future. A future that he believes can be utopian. One of Equality, free of homelessness, shared wealth and freedom of mind. In contrast, exploring a dystopian society focusing on local communities in Dakar provides a voice for those exploited and chained. Jonathan explores the contrast through his questioning designs.
A dystopian concept has endless destructive scenarios both to the environment and to the conscious mind. A hunt for survival led me to experiment with used garments in order to provide a second life. Utilising materials that are already there represents the anti-capitalist society and the existing communities which are driven away when the development of Akon city takes place.
DETAIL
For one of my garments I experimented with thermo pigments with varies types of fabrics. Firstly by treating denim pieces and direct dying the fabric I was able to achieve an earthly tone which complimented the outfit. I used the thermochromic pigments to explore emotional change when body temperature is reacted to the pigment.
