Gillian is a creative who specialises in graphic design and photography. Many of her projects have centred around sustainability and it has become a core value of hers to uphold this standard of zero waste within her design whether that be printing on 100% recycled paper or upcycling clothing for a photoshoot.
After studying fashion communication for 4 years the recurring theme through my research into styling and the industry itself was fast fashion and its waste. through many of my projects, I have made sure to highlight this issue through my content creation.
INSPIRATION
The notion that something that functions perfectly well should be replaced has become so ingrained in our society that few people question it. However, it is a relatively new concept, the result of a revolution in the advertising and manufacturing industries. I wanted to investigate the various sorts of waste in our throwaway culture - fashion, food, plastic, compost, delivery - and discover the beauty in reuse via my styling and photoshoots.
"Scraps" is all about creating a space where we can share the newest developments surrounding sustainable fashion and solve the problems within the fashion industry starting at the root problem, how we produce. From organic dye, farming fashion, sustainable sport and how we can better support sustainable brands. For both "Scraps" and "Nimiety", no studio or lighting equipment was used. The majority of my models were friends or family and all of the locations used were in my hometown of Prestwick.
DETAIL
Many of my photoshoots required preparation such as upcycling garments or making garments out of waste. I decided to document this process and share how fun the experience was for myself in hopes of inspiring others to join me in living more ethically. I am someone who has indulged in fast fashion, especially throughout my youth and I am guilty of having the floor of my room covered with unused clothes only to end up at the door of a charity shop. Through educating myself on the dangers surrounding fast fashion, I wanted to take the reader along on the journey with me and help loosen the grip fast fashion has on so many.
