About Me

PUBLICATION DESIGN / STYLING / ART DIRECTION

I am a final year student at Birmingham City University studying BA (Hons) Fashion Branding and Communications. Once graduated, I will be proceeding my studies further with an MA Fashion Styling course at Birmingham City University. Having an eye for detail and initiative, I hope to portray my skills through art direction and styling in publication.

With a strong love for print media, I want to introduce individuals to the experience of holding an actual magazine over reading it on a screen again. Independent zines portray an individuality, whether it be with their typography style or diverting away from the traditional structure of a publication. I continuously explore my own unique style regarding publication design, finding methods that grow my skills further and develop the knowledge I have already attained.

INSPIRATION

Photography that allows the reader to step into another individuals life for a moment.

Documentary photography will always be apart of the creative industry. An image can last forever, allowing people to reflect back to moments from years ago, therefore increasing the fascination towards a photo as people realise how life has changed. Everyone can admit that they enjoy looking at someone else’s life for a moment; seeing how that persons life differs from their own, or possibly to get away from their own situation for a short period, an escape.

In addition to this, there is the stereotype of how university students live. A stigma of it being the best years of your life, experiencing freedom for the first time, but reality soon hits. Due to this, I wanted to show others who are not at university what life really is like, because it is not always the best, especially over the past year. Giving students a platform to express how they truthfully feel, while show their everyday lives, away from the rose tinted glasses of social media.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

TSLZ - The Student Lockdown Zine.

The use of experimental typography and graphics allowed me to portray the true feelings felt by the students that were involved in TSLZ. Expanding my art director skills, the images and content was placed intricately to create a style throughout, understanding different emotions and experiences that were showed by the students. Alongside this, from studying previous independent zines, hidden meanings of certain areas were included to create further interest in the publication. Examples of the hidden sections is the absence of a contents page or page numbers, this was done to exclaim to feeling of confusion and not knowing what is coming next, a common thing students felt other this past year. Overall, it was key to create a physical publication to introduce the audience (students) to the print world again. To take individuals away from the digital world that has absorbed everyone, especially over the past year, but to also allow them to experience someone else’s life for a moment.

Regarding print media, I am looking forward to developing my personal style further while being introduced to the talented creatives already within the publication industry.
