About Me

Hello, I'm Freya, a fashion comms graduate from Heriot-Watt University

Meet Freya McGuire, an initiative thinker, specialising in fashion communication. Freya can’t get enough of exploring her new concept, 'Part of the Furniture', a world where fashion, humans and furniture become one. Her love for interiors and personal passion for skewing her audience’s perspective was the foundation for her new publication.

After completing my HND in Fashion Design at Glasgow Clyde College, I decided Fashion Communication was more suited to my way of thinking, I took a direct entry place into third year and finished my degree at Herriot-Watt. I'm intrigued by the creepy or unusual and then contrasting that with the idea of being 'comfortable' or using humour. I enjoy creating fantasy imagery and experimenting with bright or pastel colours. That's how I would describe my work.

INSPIRATION

The Covid-19 lockdowns triggered my idea of 'us' becoming part of the furniture.

The meaning of the word 'home' changed for me when I no longer had one. I was just seventeen when I found myself homeless, with not many doors to turn too. This was a life changing and personal struggle and I have pushed myself hard to get where I am now. I think the meaning of 'home' changed for many, when the pandemic hit in 2019. Our home became the only place we felt safe and the only place we could go. Before we knew it we all became, 'part of the furniture'.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

I wanted a character to tell the story so the Fur-man was born.

My Film was mainly created to promote my Publication, which is a coffee table style book, to get people talking. I wanted the video to have the same effect. I desired for the film to be quirky and animated, even humorous. The film features a made-up character called 'Fur-man', who is half person, half 'furniture'. The story begins with the fur-man outside, coming in, locking the world outside behind them. The film features the Fur-man doing normal everyday tasks. The main message of the film is that even though world is slowly returning to normal after the pandemic, we have been so used to 'staying at home', we ourselves have become home. Wherever we go, we take home with us, we are part of the furniture and part of our home.

"The shoot is blessed and charmed, and you make pictures that you couldn't in your wildest dreams have imagined. That is the magic of photography."- Tim Walker
