About Me

My name is Eva, I am a Final Year student at the University of Derby

Passionate about history, politics and learning about societal issues - I recreate this in my designs. My goal is to create visually stunning, ready-to-wear garments that will appeal to a large audience and will clearly illustrate and raise awareness to relevant social issues in our time.

Each of my pieces tells a story in every detail and draws inspiration from both my culture as well as the in depth research done on the topic at hand. From patterns to shapes and accessories, each element of the design symbolizes an important aspect of the concept. I opt to tell an easy to follow story in my garments and personify the subjects I intend to draw attention to.

INSPIRATION

'UTOPIA' - Final Major Project

My Final Major Project is an AW Womenswear Collection which tells the story of a young woman living in Communist Romania. For Research I looked at key elements which defined the regime visually. I also marked key elements of the ideology and translated them into relevant imagery.

The project approaches the theme of how a theoretically valid regime which aimed to create equality for the people (between men and women, the rich and the less fortunate) filed its' citizens and created the base for a generation raised on fear, paranoia and a deeply rooted need to hide and conceal their struggles. The story is told from the perspective of the young Romanian woman which's freedom over her own body and reproductive system has been taken away in favor of the ideologies of the state.

Main Outfit Specifications - 'UTOPIA' The Year of Freedom

The final design is a street wear AW2021 outfit. It merges an oversized, genderless style (inspired by the Soviet constructivist ideas of the new woman) as well as feminine elements (inspired by school uniforms of children in Communist Romania). The coat is created out of recycled wool to mimic the scrap wool used for clothing in communist china and embroidered with an eye print signifying the constant observation that the citizens of the communist state were put under. In addition, a long flag is stitched onto the coat in a vivid variation of the Romanian flag colours. The suede straps around the wrists and the wrap around the waist represent the restrictions of the women's boys during the regime. The vinyl printed jersey t-shirt has a block-print inspired by the geometric constructivist paintings and celebrates the year 1990 in which the anti-abortion law was abolished in Romania. Finally, the red pleated jersey dress is inspired by school uniforms and the red ties worn by pioneers.
