About Me

Hi I'm Emma, a fashion graduate from Cardiff Metropolitan University

As a womenswear designer I am deeply fascinated by the concept of nostalgia and the feelings derived from looking back at past experiences, which I believe is key for pushing the future of fashion. My designer handwriting communicates a sense of playfulness and vibrancy, which is at the core of my designs.

Positivity is of high importance to me when designing; I am eager to reflect feelings of joy through my concepts. I specialise in illustrating both by hand and digitally, creating intricate fashion designs, motifs and muse drawings, as well as creating digital prints which I particularly enjoy. Alongside this, my interest in digital design will allow me to push the boundaries of fashion and am enthusiastic these skills are great foundations to drive myself into a career within the fashion industry.

INSPIRATION

My inspiration came from my childhood and my experience in hospital as a child

My major fashion project titled ‘Childhood Euphoria’ explores channeling my inner child, and I have been heavily influenced by my time spent in hospital as a child with a heart defect. Taking the get well soon sentiment and finding inspiration in the activities and gifts which comforted me during this time such as doodling, sticker books and cuddly toys. Looking through photos from my childhood brought me so much joy and positivity, which is juxtaposed with my memories as an ill child.

Considering relevant upcoming trends, this Autumn/Winter 22 ready-to-wear collection expresses kidult kitsch themes with voluminous childlike silhouettes, playful prints and dainty details. My mood boosting colour palette took influence from my naive doodles and hospital gifts, which brings vibrancy to my collection and is showcased within my digital print.

DETAIL

Digital print and beaded details are at the heart of my collection

The focus on digital print and utilising the activities I found enjoyment in as a child, like making scoobies and jewellery, within my collection communicates a nostalgic feeling within both looks. The balanced mix between the naive scribbled doodles taken from my childhood, and recently exploring the use of crayons, felt tip markers and paints to create produce mindless drawings to reconnect with my inner child, enabled me to develop a playful and vibrant print, adding a personal touch within my collection. Beaded details and fishtail plaited scooby dress straps influenced by the time I spent with my grandad making jewellery and keyrings, add sentimental value to the concept of my collection.

“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.” – Tom Stoppard
