I am a multi-disciplinary creative with a focus on image making and storytelling. My creative practice surrounds the importance of celebrating craft and artisanal talent, and the interaction between craft and the natural world. I strive to create work that forms part of a wider social movement, contributing to conversations around ethical production.
I work to develop narratives around how the material world is made, utilising mediums like cyanotypes, film photography and mark making. My process is focused on the act of making and working intuitively with materials rather than gaining mastery over them. The outcomes embrace the human touch and celebrate the beauty of imperfection. My aim is to develop tactile imagery that provides a grounding experience for the viewer. I believe image-based stories can act as an intermediary to connect the audience to their surroundings and encourage reflection on the impact we have on our environment.
INSPIRATION
My creative ideas emerge when I engage with my surroundings. Being able to read the meaning, beauty and stories hidden within the tangible things that surround us, is a skill I wanted to share with my audience through my final project. This project is an exploration of the relationship between what is made and what occurs naturally. I view this relationship as a symbiotic one, where nature provides inspiration and materials for craft, while craft can encourage considered consumption.
The tangible world holds stories about how and why they were made. I strive to tell these stories to connect us in a meaningful way to our surroundings. Nature has always been a source of calm and clarity for me, and so I always consider the environmental implications of my practice. Printing cyanotypes on seed paper has become a core aspect of my process, finding lower impact ways of working, and creating a match of medium to content by incorporating natural elements like water and sun.
DETAIL
My practice extends beyond still imagery and incorporates video and sound to create sensory experiences that connect an audience to the world around them on a deeper level. This experimental film invites you outside for a walk through the natural world. Utilising soundscape techniques, the audience becomes immersed in leaves crunching beneath their feet, rustling in the wind, birds calling as they soar and waves crashing onto the shore. The film follows the craft process of four different artisans’, capturing the movement of the hands as they perform a meditative dance. The sequences are intersected with clips of nature, incorporating the artisans’ sources of inspiration and raw materials. Utilising mixed media in the form of mark making paper cut outs and hand-drawn frames, the film champions human creativity and the beauty of imperfection.
