Emily Grimes is a creative individual who specialises in Fashion Design. Someone who likes to think outside of the box and has a keen eye for detail, with strong skills in fine art, garment manufacture, pattern cutting, adobe photoshop and illustrator.
With the fashion industry growing at a rapid pace, the importance of reducing our carbon footprint never been more vital. My work celebrates this by using second hand material and transforming fabric such as leather into something new and different. With each season bringing new designs and more clothing into the fashion world, my collection plays with the idea of wearing it through summer, winter, whilst exploring different personal style, with interchangeable and reversible pieces. I strive for perfection and explore art, design and creativity in my work, the only limit is my imagination.
INSPIRATION
Growing up with films from 'The Mummy', 'Percy Jackson' to tv shows like 'True Blood' or 'Supernatural', has peaked my interest into the histories of myths and folklore. I am particularly inspired by the Wendigo, which originates from Native American folklore. My development plays on transformation from human to monster, this relates to the Wendigo which was once an astray human, cut off from supplies, whose hunger drove them to cannibalism.
Wanting to incorporate my Northampton heritage that is known for it's leather and shoe industry, my research develops further by investigating superstition, for example how it is considered bad luck to leave shoes on the table. To incorporate this into my designs, I experiment with the placement of shoes on a Mannequin. Taking inspiration from the cut of a shoe to how it's manufactured, to details like stitching and turning them into shoe-pernatural designs.
DETAIL
Each piece was hand cut one by one in order to fit so precisely, time and skill went into the colour, placement and stitching to bring together high quality material that was made to look brand new. The cut was inspired by the the edge detailing often found on brogues. Placement was inspired by the floor tiling from a shoe factory and the stitching was inspired by Frankenstein's Monster and the idea of a variety of bodies was sewn together to create him. The aim was to combine leather and turn it into a supernatural distortion.
