Throughout my three years studying fashion design at university, I have come to realise that my main passion Is creating innovative, modern streetwear; focusing on provoking concepts of female empowerment and free expression within my creations. I love to design bold ‘statement’ pieces that exude fun and fearlessness, directed towards a youthful target market.
I love to look into previous eras, including the 80s and 90s, for both style and print inspiration, especially within my final major project. The 1990s had various female icons. From Christina Aguilera, to Britney Spears, to Madonna. These stars of the time were heavily empowering, influencing the young adults of that time with their powerful styles and statement looks.
INSPIRATION
For my final collection, I wanted to capture my opinions based on typical stereotype is an unfair judgement within female fashion today. I believe that our level of femininity is often predetermined through our clothes; for example revealing clothing that shows skin/ fits tightly often leads to ‘slut shaming’ whereas chunky oversized/ casual clothing leads to the perception that we lack femininity. I disagree with this majorly; what we choose to wear should not determine our level of femininity
Delving deep into my personal influences, my mum is definitely my main source of inspiration. From her memorable style whilst growing up, to her positive outlook on life and bold personality, there is no one I have ever wanted to be, more than my mum. To me, she’s a symbol of female empowerment; looking back at old pictures of her from the 90’s, whether she was wearing my dad‘s chunky jackets, or feminine corset tops and dresses, it didn’t matter what she was wearing, she owned it.
DETAIL
For my final collection, I wanted my main outfit to be a statement, memorable look. The first garment within the outfit is a tight fitting bodice jumpsuit, with long wide legs. I dyed the satin fabric a bold pink, and created intricate style lines with top stitching details. The jumpsuit also includes obscure cutout sections at the hips and centre of the jumpsuit; created to enhance the natural shape of the female body. My second garment, contrastingly, is a chunky monochrome suede puffer jacket; with hugely oversized sleeves, however very cropped for the purpose of allowing the jumpsuit to be visible. I created the bold and busy graphic print, inspired by the 1990’s, through sublimating onto the suede. The puffer jacket also includes quilting lines, and a bold green lining specifically to contrast both between the monochrome print, and the pink jumpsuit. I have taken contrast in both silhouette and colour into consideration in order to make this campaign look stand out.
