About Me

HI I'M ELYSIA, A GRADUATE FROM SOLENT UNIVERSITY, SOUTHAMPTON

Both fashion and photography have been a large part of my life ever since I can remember. I have always enjoyed taking photographs of my friends and family, and in hand with that also had a huge love for fashion. My main inspiration for shoot concepts comes from a mixture of high fashion runways and icons such as Bowie and Cher.

The aim behind my photographic work is to inspire, educate and intrigue people. I have always been inspired by photographers who represent emotion and vulnerability in their work, paired with strong editorial fashion styling.

INSPIRATION

MY INITIAL INSPIRATION CAME FROM MY LOVE AND ADMIRATION FOR LGBTQ+ ARTISTS

The selected topic which I decided to focus on for my Final Major Project was Gender. Gender is a very strong topic of discussion in current western society, and something which has been explored within the fashion industry for decades. I decided that I wanted to choose a trending societal topic for my project as it would allow my work to feel relevant and important within not only the current western world in general, but the fashion industry also.

As a creative individual, I have always wanted to create fashion photography projects which felt more than just a fashion image, but something which has a deeper purpose or meaning, and therefore I felt that choosing such a topic as Gender would be a good opportunity to portray this successfully. The sole aim for this book project was to give people a space to feel free through their own expression, with styled fashion images that represent how the individuals choose to identify and express themselves.

DETAIL

I CREATED A MIXTURE OF REMOTE, LOCATION AND STUDIO SHOOTS

Since this coffee table book project was created during the coronavirus pandemic, I decided to create a mixture of remote shoots as well as location and studio shoots. This allowed me to work with models from across the world, with all different gender expressions and identities. I also asked each of the models to hand write a note explaining their personal experiences and definitions of gender- making the book feel as raw and honest as possible.

‘A gender-equal society would be one where the word ‘gender’ does not exist: where everyone can be themselves.’ -Gloria Steinem
