About Me

I’m Eleanor, a fashion comms graduate from Arts University Bournemouth

Eleanor Hope-Ross is a creative who specialises in photography, graphics and publications, with a specific interest in feminism and inclusivity. Her work focuses on the stories and journeys of female and queer creatives, and aims to put a spotlight on those under-represented and unappreciated in the art industry.

Growing up in the creative industry, I had to notice the palpable, and disproportionate lack of women and queer people in top roles in the art and fashion industry, which affected my own aspirations to be a creative director in the publication industry. My aim in my own work is to empower female and queer creatives to aspire to - and achieve - these roles, as we all have important stories to tell and I believe our art influences wider culture.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration sprung at a museum, as I stared at the depiction of women in classic art.

As I stood in the Watts gallery, I stared at the portrait of Harmonia, nude; her husband wrapped around her as the snake he had been turned into by Ares. I couldn’t help but wonder why so many women in classic art - in all the galleries I had been to, were suffering at the fate of men. Somehow it felt slightly reflective, but also sad that women in art are often under the pin of ‘beautifully victim’, and there isn’t enough art depicting women with depth of more than beauty.

It occurred to me that in order to have rich stories of women and queer people in art and fashion, we need to have women and queer people directing and narrating. Cis-gendered men dominate creative director roles in fashion, and even in the modern art scene, the most famous women and queer people’s art makes substantially less than men at the same level of fame in modern art. To contrast, the most expensive art ever sold, made by a male artists, was $450 million, to the $44.4 million by a female artist.

MY WORK

PORTFOLIOS

DETAIL

I created an all female and queer art publication to approach inequalities in the industry.

EVE is an art and fashion publication that explores women and queer people’s issues through the lens of feminine artists and their artwork. It’s main goal as a publication is to act as a megaphone for these artists, amplifying their reach, and hence their greater social impact on society. The publication explores how women and queer people’s art is inherently political, as many elements of their lives are politicised, whether that’s their bodies, their sexuality, or their expression. The publication features female and queer fine artists, photographers, textile artists, fashion designers, and graphic designers.
